When it comes to designing plastic parts, any mistakes can be quite costly this is why as a plastic manufacturer it’s important to get things right from the very start of a project.

While many tips and tricks exist to make sure you get the right plastic part in this two-part post we look at six ways that will help save you money.

When designing plastic parts or starting a project there are few important things to take into account.

What’s your budget?

Before you start any work its essential to understand the budget you are working with. Ideally you need to have both a tooling and piece-price in mind. At this early stage it is useful to be given an estimate to enable a quick reality check regarding costs.

Are you using the right type of plastic?

At the start of any project it’s important to find out as much as possible about the end part as possible. From there you can decide which material will be most appropriate for what you are trying to do. Getting this right first time will save you a lot of money.

Is the design fit for purpose?

This point goes back to knowing what the part you’re manufacturing will be used for. You need to remember that plastics can be flavoured, perfumed, self-lubricating, colour changing, and so on so you need to discuss the function of the part with the client and what the possibilities are.

The last thing you want to do is spend time, materials and money manufacturing a part that’s shiny for example when the application indicates that a simple machine finish will be fine.
