Considered the world’s beverage and liquid food industry conference and exhibition, this year’s Drinktec (11-15 September) had plenty of surprises to offer its visitors.

Plastic & Chemical Trading MD Benjamin Cockram, who spent the entire week in Messe, Munchen, reports on the highlights.

Tell us more about Drinktec and why it was so important to Plastic and Chemical Trading to attend this year?

The Drinktec exhibition in Munchen is the get-together for the whole industry where the manufacturers showcase their latest technologies, and all decision-makers come together under one roof. You won’t find this kind of display at local events.

Because of our positioning in the market as Heuft, we do business with the bigger players and was important for Plastic & Chemical trading to be present at the exhibition and catch up with the biggest innovations in the industry.

Drinktec only happens every four years, and we always make a point to participate in the show.

What was your overall impression of this year’s Drinktec exhibition in Munchen?

There were serious innovations and impressive disruptive technologies showcased this time around. I was truly impressed, and this edition was, in my opinion, one of the best I have attended.

We primarily focused on our partner stalls, Heuft, Netstal and MHT Mold & Hotrunner technology, but I was very impressed overall with the technology showcased at the show.

There was some impressive disruptive technology on display, and looking back I wished I had spent more time around the booths!

In your opinion, what were the highlights of this year’s Drinktec exhibition?

Definitely the Krones Dynafill system for the beer filling industry. The machine fills in a split second in a vacuum and adds capping. The dispensing and jetting are done in one sole functional unit within less than five seconds. The whole process is fast.

I also think the multipack solution from KHS – the machine packaging unit for beverages – was impressive from a sustainability perspective. The 6-pack prototype showed the packs hot-glued and stuck together.

In essence, the manufacturer can have a perfect multipack where it can break one unit off, and the rest still stays stacked together.  It is an ingenious packaging for marketing purposes and does not use any plastic film, making it a viable green option.

Sustainable solutions were a big hit at Drinktec. Sustainability has been the buzzword for over a decade, but the solutions are finally maturing to be real ones.

I think sustainability is humanity’s most critical objective. Things are now actually working and moving in the right direction.
