There is a new benchmark in packaging, with more and more global packaging enterprises announcing to make their packaging fully recyclable or reusable by 2025.

Giant group Amcor is the first global packaging company announcing to have all of its packaging 100% recyclable or reusable by then.

The company simultaneously committed to significantly increasing its use of recycled materials and driving consistently more recycling of packaging around the world.

Packaging is vital to assuring the safety and effectiveness of an extensive range of food, beverage, medical, pharmaceutical, household and personal-care products.  It also significantly limits the enormous environmental implications from food and other product waste.

Most of Amcor’s packaging today is developed to be recyclable and reusable, and is designed to use less material in the first place. Still, there is more that can be done to make packaging entirely recyclable and reusable.

Amcor is among the world’s largest manufacturers of rigid plastic packaging for the food, beverage, spirits, personal care, home care and healthcare industries. It has a larger footprint in flexible packaging as well by sales percentage.

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, UK-based Ellen MacArthur Foundation (EMF) believed the commitment to switch to 100% recyclable or reusable packaging by 2025 is an important milestone towards creating a circular economy for plastics.

EMF’s mission is to accelerate the world’s transition to a circular economy, in which plastics and other resources are significantly reused and recycled.  The organisation called for more plastics packaging suppliers to commit to the cause.

Some of the biggest challenges to recyclable and reusable packaging remain. These can be overcome through leadership and innovation, in partnership with customers, suppliers, government agencies, NGOs and others.

Similar recycling commitments and actions will make a positive and perceptible difference throughout the plastics and packaging communities.
