Extrusion technology

Complete pelletizing system starts with the preparation of the raw materials, extends to the feed into the pelletizing extruder, through the pelletizing head, into cooling and then discharged into Silos or big bags.

We are the partners to supply you with complete pelletizing systems from raw material preparation to the storage of finished granules in silos with machine configuration suitable for hard and soft PVC (U-PVC, S-PVC and C-PVC) with our focus on producing high quality, complex material; most efficiently.

Economic production of PVC pellets calls for a high degree of know-how. Perfect control of the pelletizing process is just as important here as competence in handling raw materials and formulations.

Krauss Maffei 32D twin-screw extruders optimises material processing, improves melt homogeneity and permits a wide processing window when processing many different materials.

Benefits

  • High output rate of up to +20% with the 32 L/D ratio compared to same screw diameter extruders
  • Better ratio of shear to heat energy allowing for more flexible control
  • Less peripheral screw speed for same output leads to less wear and low melt temperature
  • Increased flexibility and greater cost-efficiency

Applications

  • U-PVC
  • S-PVC
  • C-PVC
  • Highly filled materials
  • Recycled materials
  • Special applications

We offer solutions that can meet the needs of both small-scale sample tests as well as mass production showing significant advantages with first class product quality. Whether you wish to produce standard colour masterbatch or highly filled carbon black masterbatch, we want to be your partner in achieving a quality product with colour precision and excellent dispersion.

With Krauss Maffei colour compounding technology, you can produce colour masterbatches with unique colour precision. Colour masterbatches are usually based on mono-concentrates, which are produced on single-screw extruders in a separate process step, intermediately stored and then fed into the twin-screw extruder in a second step. With the liquid colour compounding technology, the intermediate mono-concentrate production step is no longer required. The resulting colour masterbatches stand out for unparalleled cost-effectiveness and unique colour precision.

In addition, Krauss Maffei twin-screw extruders are self-cleaning, meaning changes from dark to bright colours can be made without any problems. Our clients benefit from Krauss Maffei’s extensive experience by offering adequate recipes stored in the proprietary Process Control Advanced system which can be chosen and activated for the complete line at the simple push of a button.

Machinery benefits:

  • Stable and efficient production with a maximum torque density of 16Nm/cm3.
  • Flexible process provided by flexible barrel combination
  • Extreme efficiency with C-clamp design making it easier and more convenient for customers to assemble and disassemble the barrel and easier to clean.
  • Excellent quality with wider-opened barrels to feed colour powder and other inorganic substances. Avoiding the problems of overflow and venting.

With increased restrictions and regulations on plastic material and plastic product production, such as the Extended Producer Responsibility, recycled material has increasing demand.

Whether you’re looking for unique solutions for inhouse recycling, one extruder recycling or two extruder upcycling, we want to be your partner in producing recycled or upcycled material that the industry truly desires.

Recycling and compounding all kinds of recyclable thermoplastic waste in a cascading process allows for:

  • maximum reduction of thermal stress from only plastifying and pelletizing once
  • reducing operating costs due to energy and time saving production
  • Added value to the supply-chain
  • Large range of applications
  • Maximum flexibility

We offer turn-key solutions for industrial waste as well as post-consumer waste; from material preparation such as washing, grinding and sorting through to material handling and feeding, recycling, filtering, degassing, pelletizing, storing and control systems for the entire line.

Recycling can be done with either a single screw or twin-screw extruder depending on the application with consideration to:

  • degassing optimisation
  • melt homogeneity
  • melt filtration
  • throughput requirements
  • sheer and pressure stresses and compounding requirements

Advanced technology such as ColourAdjust by Krauss Maffei allows for colour measurement and regulation. Inline quality control can be implemented for liquid colour and masterbatch in recycling and compounding where any disturbance can be compensated. A higher colour quality can be achieved with less waste creation due to colour fluctuations. ColorAdjust offers the shortest time for measurement and control eliminating production interruptions.

EdelWeissCompounding technology

Recycling and Compounding in one step

EdelweissCompounding lines are rated for throughputs of up to 6 t/h. The main benefit of this extrusion solution is the direct conversion of reclaim material into high-quality compounds in a single heat.

  • Production of high-quality individual compounds
  • Less energy costs
  • Reduction of thermal impact
  • Throughputs of up to 6 t/h

We offer all functions required to build a high-performance extrusion line:

  • first-concept planning
  • basic and detail design
  • interface co-ordination with other suppliers
  • layout of laboratory and workshop
  • plant construction
  • training of operator personnel and commissioning
  • Advice on optimisation of production processes and technical support throughout your production lifespan

Technology:

Krauss Maffei’s co-rotating twin-screw extruders can be tailored through the screw elements to create the perfect screw configuration for your process requirements with more than fifty screw element varieties for each extruder size.

Screw elements:

  • conveying elements with different lengths and pitches, multi-start, self-wiping, laterally sealing or with pushing flight profile with increased free screw volume
  • mixing elements in different lengths
  • kneading elements in different lengths, offsets and pitch angles
  • barrier elements in the form of blister discs and back-pumping elements

Operating:

In conjunction with the shear energy input, our operating principle guarantees optimum compounding results in terms of dispersion and distribution.

  • Application of the latest in modern gearing technology has resulted in a very compact design and extremely low noise levels
  • Heating is done by high-power heating cartridges, which work faster and thus give more rapid start-up
  • Our extruders are characterized by above-average torque
  • Benefitting the Ultra Glide which has a drive unit, enabling the whole extruder drive unit with both screws to be moved backwards, leaving the processing section in place. This is done in less than one minute and makes it possible to carry out a rapid and precise visual inspection of the current state of the process
  • Various barrel types available for different modular processing allow for vertical and horizontal feeding, degassing, liquid injection and vertical air removal
